Insulin patches for diabetes

Insulin is very important for balancing the glucose level in the body. For people with diabetes type 1 the pancreas no longer forms insulin, which leads to taking injections of insulin on daily basis. These insulin injections are painful and not as user friendly as it should be.

The researchers at North Carolina State University in collaboration with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill have come up with a creation which will facilitate many users of insulin injections. They have developed smart insulin patches for sufficing the insulin needs of the body. The creation is still underway, as it has been only tested in animal models; it has created lots of hope and expectations.

The small patch is small as a penny and contains hundreds of tiny needles. These microneedles are packed with insulin and glucose sensing enzymes which quickly are released in the blood when the sugar levels are sensed to be high.

Diabetes is known to affect more than 387 people around the world and is known to show a growing pattern by the year 2035. This patch form of insulin is far better than the insulin injections which are painful and need lots of precision. The researchers are further trying to develop it so that it only needs to be changed after few days.

The development of the insulin patches have brought in new hope for the people suffering from diabetes
